The Wanted 18 is a Canada-Palestinian documentary film that presents the efforts of the Palestinians living in the city and region of Beit Sahour to start a small local dairy industry during the first intifada. They hid a herd of eighteen dairy cows from Israeli security forces who considered the dairy production a threat to the national security of Israel. The challenge while turning this story into an interactive graphic novel, was to give a new, more playful look on this rather sensitive issue. Indeed, the app tells the story from the perspective of the cows, rather than the humans, contrary to the documentary film.
The application plunges users into the immersive world of an interactive graphic novel in which genres intersect; hand-drawn illustrations, photorealistic 3D images, and traditional stop-motion animation. Throughout each chapter, the user will experience the world, the personality, and the perspective of each of the five cows from the film. As a tablet application, the experience takes full advantage of the interactive features and capabilities of mobile devices, creating a unique experience where the tablet actually becomes a window into The Wanted 18 universe.
The story is punctuated by mini-games that allow the user to guide story, thus bringing the interactivity to another level.
In order to bridge the gap between the documentary and the app, as well as to give life to the interactive novel, the game is peppered with traditional stop-motion scenes.
The creation of the Wanted 18 interactive graphic novel required a year of hard work. The team was tasked to, among other things, write the script of the story, create the photographic content, create the UI design and put together the interactive development.
