A Journal of insomnia is a web documentary produced in collaboration with the NFB. It’s primary premise is to bring the user to discover different aspects of insomnia, interactively. The visual identity developed for the project including the typographie and the colors chosen both recall a traditional alarm clock.
Every element of graphic design is in direct link with the visual identity; intense colour contrasts, shrieking elements, glitches... Anything to make a user the most uncomfortable, just like as sleepless night would.
Akufen has created an installation which was first presented for the Nuit Blanche in Montreal, and also at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Our goal? For the user to live the same experience in real life as you would on the website. We’ve built an insomniacs confessionnal which is basically a dark small and dingy box complete with projections, content capturing and live Twitter feed.
The first phase of the project was to get insomniacs to trust us so that we would ultimately be granted access to their world of sleepless nights and restless torment. The interface was minimal and comforting in order to create a climate of trust. We then gathered the information to create the second phase of the project which is the web documentary. Participants are then brought into contact with four insomniacs, and are then let into their world to experience their own sleepless night. The experience itself is nonlinear the user can discover multiple routes.
